Open every day for breakfast, lunch, coffee and a huge selection of homebaking. We’re an independent coffee shop on the edge of Soutra Hill at the meeting of Midlothian, East Lothian and the Scottish Borders. Soutra is a fantastic spot to catch-up with friends, pause on a long journey, or simply to treat yourself to coffee and cake with stretching views towards the North Sea. Take-away also available.

We use local ingredients wherever possible. Breakfast, lunch, coffee and cakes can all be enjoyed inside, outside on our terrace or “to go”. Soutra is perhaps best known for our fabulous range of homebaking which changes each day. We have over 300 recipes so you’ll never be short of something new to try! We always have scones, shortbread, cakes, meringues and traybakes available. Our menu caters for those with special dietary requirements including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options available every day too.

how to find us

Soutra is located at House of Soutra, at the northern foot of Soutra Hill, just off the A68. It’s just inside Midlothian, and right on the edge of the Scottish Borders and East Lothian. To the north, the nearest village is Fala, and beyond that, Pathhead. To the south, the closest villages are Oxton and Lauder. This is very much a rural landscape, with farming land and hills all around us. From here, the views extend right across East Lothian to the North Sea. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Bass Rock! The location offers a welcome rest point for many on long north-south journeys on the A68.
